According to Olympic regulations (Scotland), Wales, and England were prohibited from competing separately as they do not qualify as sovereign nations. During World Cup years, a condensed tournament is organized, allowing each team to compete against all others just once. The competition returned to its original home-and-away format of the Tri Nations but now includes four teams. A new system was implemented in 2006 (allowing each nation to face the others three times), although in 2007 and 2011, teams met only twice due to both being World Cup years. Recently (the world rankings have been led by these teams), and many deem the Tri Nations to be the most challenging competition in international rugby. The Rugby Championship is the yearly international series for the leading national teams in the Southern Hemisphere.
A more recent variant of the sport is rugby tens (10s or Xs), a Malaysian invention with ten players per side. In rugby sevens, there are only seven players per side, and each half is normally seven minutes. The oldest variant is rugby sevens , sometimes 7s or VIIs,, a fast-paced game which originated in Melrose, Scotland in 1883. Following the 2014 event, World Rugby moved the next edition of the event to 2017, with a new four-year cycle from that point forward.
Positions and teams.
Rugby union is played between two teams – the one that scores more points wins the game. They also feed the scrum and sometimes have to act as a fourth loose forward. They receive the ball from the lineout and remove the ball from the back of the scrum — usually passing it to the fly-half.
They are usually the first to receive the ball from the scrum-half following a breakdown — lineout, or scrum, and need to be decisive with what actions to take and be effective at communicating with the outside backs. The half-backs consist of two positions (the scrum-half and the fly-half), also known in the Southern Hemisphere as half-back and first five-eighth respectively. The two flanker positions, known as the blindside flanker and openside flanker, are the final row in the scrum.
During the Second World War no international matches were played by most countries (though Italy), Germany and Romania played a limited number of games, and Cambridge and Oxford continued their annual University Match. No international rugby games and union-sponsored club matches were played during the First World War, but competitions continued through service teams such as the New Zealand Army team. Players in these positions are generally bigger and stronger and take part in the scrum and line-out. A maul forms when a player in possession of the ball contacts an opponent while remaining on their feet; binding of at least three players signifies the establishment of a maul. A player is permitted to tackle an opponent holding the ball by grasping them and bringing them down to the ground. The defending team’s goal is to prevent the ball carrier from advancing by tackling them, either taking them to the ground (often leading to a ruck) or engaging in a contest for possession while the ball-carrier remains upright (resulting in a maul). If a player kicks the ball indirectly into touch after it first bounces in the field of play, the throw-in occurs at the point where the ball crossed into touch.
